Starwood Preferred Guest has a new promotion Triple Up that triples the number of Starpoints you usually earn when you stay at their properties. This is very useful if you have the American Express Starwood card because you will earn the base 2 points per dollar, multiplied by 3, which equals 6 Starpoints per dollar!
Now let's say you are Starwood Preferred Guest Gold, like I am. I automatically get this status just by having the AMEX Platinum card. Anyone with Gold status will get the base 3 Starpoints per dollar spent, multiplied by 3, resulting in 9 points per dollar spent! Remember, free nights at Starwood hotels can be redeemed for as little as 3000 Starpoints.
Let's do the math. Let's say that you are staying at a Starwood property costing $250/night for Thursday and Friday night. You use the Better Tomorrows promotion which gives you 40% off your second night stay. With SPG Gold status, you will get 3600 Starpoints for this stay. That is enough points to stay a free night at many Starwood properties. So for $250 + ($250-40%) = $400, you've stayed 3 nights which would normally cost $750.
